In the eighteenth century, The George stood as a bustling coaching inn, witnessing the passage of coaches through the archway, leading to the inn-yard beyond. Picture the lively scenes of candidates addressing the public from the balcony over the archway during election times – a tradition that added to the hotel's allure. Throughout its storied past, The George has been synonymous with the Whig faction, while The Swan, just opposite, proudly stood as a bastion of Tory principles. The intriguing political history of the locale adds an extra layer of character to your visit.
