One Small Step: The George celebrates 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landings

5th July 2019

The George Hotel is thrilled to announce their sponsorship of Lichfield Cathedral’s summer installation ‘One Small Step’.

The artwork will give visitors the opportunity to walk on the moon as the Cathedral’s Nave floor will be transformed into a spectacular lunar landscape.

The installation artwork is by Lichfield Cathedral’s artist-in-residence Peter Walker and can be seen from Saturday 20th July until Wednesday 25th September 2019. It allows us to contemplate and observe one of the most significant journeys that humanity has taken and allows us to imagine possibilities for humankind.

Celebrating 50th Anniversary of the Historic Moon Landing

On July 16 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins lifted off from Launch Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on a journey to the moon and into history. Four days later, while Collins orbited the moon in the command module, Armstrong and Aldrin landed Apollo 11’s lunar module, Eagle, on the moon’s Sea of Tranquility, becoming the first humans to set foot on the lunar surface.

The George Hotel is sponsoring the launch of ‘One Small Step’ on Saturday 20th July. On this day the moon floor will be unveiled at 10am and will be open until 5pm (entry is free). The Cathedral will reopen at 8pm for a special service to mark the exact moment the Eagle landed at 9:17pm.

The exhibition is open Thursdays to Sundays from 8th August from 8pm and advance tickets are on sale now.   The exhibition runs until August Bank Holiday on 26th August. The ‘One Small Step’ moon floor experience is included in The Great Exhibition.
